InteliBuild, a business unit of Canam Group Inc., specialized in virtual design and construction consulting services as well as building information modeling (BIM), is partnering in the construction of a Marriott Marquis hotel in Washington, D.C.
InteliBuild's mandate includes the integration, monitoring and management of multiple 3D models within the central model being shared by the steel builder and the erector. The project has only just begun and the use of a central model has already allowed for a more efficient scheduling of work and rapid decision-making following the addition of a number of structural components that would have otherwise resulted in an interference later on the construction process. InteliBuild will also supply detailed drawings as well as verify shop drawings for the fabrication of various components. Construction is slated to continue through to the end of 2012.
Innovative construction method
The construction of the Washington, D.C. Marriott Marquis is a highly complex project that will be undertaken using a top-down approach. According to this method, the construction of the lower floors, which will feature a steel frame, begins at ground level while the upper floors, which will be made from concrete, will be erected simultaneously.
