The BIM team working with general contractor Gammon HIP Hing JV recently won an award from the Hong Kong Airport Authority for its safety performance on the Cathay Pacific Cargo Terminal project.
At its annual safety awards ceremony on March 31, the Airport Authority presented William Kuk of InteliBuild and Ivy Tsang, Ho Sin Hon, Man Kit and Lawrence Wong of the Gammon Hip Hing JV consortium with a safety recognition award for “outstanding achievement in accident prevention”.
BIM for improved site safety
The use of 3D BIM models allows the entire project team to improve worker safety on construction sites.
One of the big benefits of using BIM models is that it enables the various trade contractors to determine precise locations for specific MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) systems and the correct order for installing them on site. The ability to coordinate the details ahead of time provides for more efficient construction scheduling and means that workers do not have to work in hazardous conditions.
3D models also help to identify potential clashes between various structural and mechanical systems in the proposed building design. Without BIM models, trade contractors who discover a problem after a system has been installed have to dismantle part of it and then rebuild it. The advantage of using BIM models is that it reduces on-site work, manpower and, as a result, the risk of site accidents.
In addition, BIM models include enough space around the equipment to make sure that it can be accessed and moved safely for installation and servicing.
