Structal-Heavy Steel Construction
, business unit of Canam Group
Structal-Heavy Steel Construction has obtained a US$12.5 million contract (C$15.6 million) from general contractor Turner Construction for the fabrication and erection of the Newseum, an interactive museum dedicated to the newsgathering trade. The museum had expanded and relocated from Arlington, VA, to downtown Washington, D.C.
The new, expanded Newseum is a six-story building with a total area of 516,000 square feet. The design of the steel-framed structure was both unique and complex, requiring the fabrication of several value-added products, notably two tri-dimensional roof trusses 250 feet long by 18 feet deep and weighing 190 tons, representing a huge fabrication challenge. The large trusses had an unconventional geometry, with web members offset from the center line, outside the plane of the upper and lower chords. The building’s unique architecture helped to give the museum added inside and outside visibility.
